The power supply is often the most underrated component of a PC, performing an extremely important function by distributing incoming power from the mains to each of the computer's components.

ASUS offers several separate lines of power supplies for PCs; each is distinguished by its design and unique set of functions:

  • ROG Strix Aura Gold Edition is a line of high-performance power supplies in a stylish case, featuring an RGB ROG logo on the side panel, compatible with Aura Sync technology.
  • ROG Thor is a line of ultra-high-power supplies with excellent performance and flawless cooling. These units feature Aura Sync RGB lighting and a small OLED display on the side panel, showing real-time power consumption (for example, 90YE00L2-B0NA00).
  • ROG Loki is, as everyone might guess from the name, the younger brother of the Thor line, offering the same platinum efficiency but in a more compact SFX-L form factor for Mini-ITX builds.
  • ASUS TUF Gaming Gold is reliable power supplies designed to withstand the test of time and work for many years.

However, even within these individual product lines, the user needs to narrow down the choices based on PC configurations.

Power determination requirements

If the user is not sure about the power requirements for the next unit, ASUS provides a convenient table for NVIDIA and AMD graphics processors, serving as a guide to determine power needs based on the existing hardware. So, if the processor is Intel i5 and RTX 4080, it is recommended to choose a 750W power supply, such as the TUF Gaming 750W Gold or ROG Strix 750W Gold Aura Edition. If the user later upgrade to i9 and RTX 4090, it will be needed to increase the power supply capacity to 1,000 W.

Choice of efficiency level

When calculating the system needs, it is also necessary to take into account the efficiency of the power supply unit. After all, when it consumes electricity from the mains, part of it is necessarily lost. The higher the power supply unit's efficiency, the better it converts watts of power from the mains into watts of power for the computer, which means lower electricity bills, less heat for the power supply and the entire PC, and therefore less noise from the cooling system.

Fortunately, all modern ROG and TUF Gaming power supplies are 80 Plus Gold certified or higher. This means that at 50% load they can convert 90% of AC from the mains to DC for the computer. Premium power supplies such as Thor 1000W Platinum II or Thor 1600W Titanium boast even greater performance.

Modular and non-modular designs

Many power supplies come with all cables attached to the main unit, meaning the user can just connect in and start working. All ROG and TUF Gaming power supplies feature a modular design, which means the user can disconnect unused cables for better cable management and a neater builds appearance.

Moreover, many current generation graphics cards use the new 12VHPWR standard. The current generation of ROG and TUF power supplies come with dedicated 12VHPWR cables included, eliminating the need for an adapter for graphics cards that utilize this standard. The advantage of modularity is that if the graphics card has standard 8-pin PCIe power connectors, the ROG power supply will also have a full set of cables to support the card.

Additional advantages

ROG Thor power supplies support Aura Sync RGB lighting and feature a built-in OLED display that can be controlled using Armory Crate. With just a single button press, the user can easily synchronize the RGB lighting of the power supply with the rest of the equipment, while the OLED display provides real-time system monitoring without using specialized monitoring software.

To cool all ROG power supplies, additional radiators are used, allowing the cooling fan to remain off under low loads, providing truly silent PC operation. When necessary, the 135 mm Axial-tech fan can engage while maintaining acceptable acoustic levels.

Although black suits most builds, some users prefer white to make their system more expressive and stylish. Considering this, ASUS has developed white versions of some power supplies, such as the ROG Loki 850W Platinum White Edition.

Regardless of which power supply someone choose, everyone can be sure that with ASUS and Republic of Gamers power supplies, the system will receive reliable, stable power for all components installed in the gaming PC.
